About

Discover the rich history of firefighting in Greater Manchester at Fireground. Learn about the area's pivotal role in the development of fire brigades and fire engineering, from forming England’s first municipal fire service in 1826 to receiving the country’s earliest motorised fire engine in 1901. Pioneering chief fire officers such as Alfred Tozer and George Parker helped shape the reputation of local fire brigades through their innovative measures and technical skills.

With over 200 years of history, Greater Manchester's fire services have faced a wide range of incidents, from house fires to industrial blazes and major emergencies like world wars and terrorist attacks. The area was also a key centre for manufacturing fire engines and equipment, with companies like William Rose and Mather & Platt achieving universal success.

Explore the museum's collection of twenty-five larger exhibits, showcasing the evolution of firefighting appliances over the years. From fire engines to uniforms, medals, and paintings, the museum offers a comprehensive insight into the world of firefighting.

Originally opened in 1983, the museum became an independent charitable trust in 2010. It maintains close ties with the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and holds accreditation from Visit England and the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom. Educational visits are available for students of all ages, covering topics such as The Great Fire of London, Victorians, and The Blitz. Dive into the fascinating world of firefighting history at The Museum of Firefighting.
