About

Dating back to the late 16th century this fascinating half-timbered building is still a popular and comfortable pub. Surrounded by 19th and 20th century buildings on the main road from Middleton to Rochdale, this half-timbered pub comes as a surprise but, like the other ancient buildings in the ‘Middleton Golden Cluster’, it bears testament to Middleton’s long heritage. Leaflets available at the pub tell visitors about its origins in 1632, changes over the centuries, how the pub got its name, its use as a court, The Assheton family (Middleton’s Lords of the Manor), and the Peterloo Massacre of 1819.
